The 7th and final stage of the National Championship of Sea Canoeing, the Lagoa Beaches – Downwind, will gather around 180 Portuguese and Spanish athletes in Lagoa, on October 20.
The match will start at Praia Grande, in Ferragudo, at 3:00 p.m., arriving at Senhora da Rocha beach.
It is an organization of the Municipality of Lagoa, through its services of Sport and Youth, in partnership with the Kayak Club Castores do Arade.
This year's edition will be attended by the best national athletes, most notably Bernardo Pereira, the junior athlete of the Naval da Calheta (Madeira) who recently won the bronze medal at the Ocean Racing European Championships in Vilajoyosa (Spain) and João Ruivo, of the Naval de Sesimbra, which, in the category of seniors, also in Europeans, reached 14th place and has already secured the national title with five consecutive victories.
Among the women, the organization points to the presence of Sara Rafael, CN Litoral Alentejano, also national champion, and Sofia Coelho, Naval of Sesimbra, who won the last two stages and represented Portugal in the European Ocean Racing, where he reached the 12th place.
This is the 6th edition of Lagoa Beach – Downwind, which, curiously, has five different winners in men's absolutes in other editions. In women, the "queen" of the race has been Sara Rafael, with five victories in five editions.
Sea kayaking, where surfskis are used, is a fast-growing specialty in canoeing in Portugal and Europe, where athletes enjoy sea and wind conditions in their favor, in defined paths in the open sea, preferably in favor of the wind (downwind), with departure and arrival at different locations.
