Leixões was crowned three-time national women's volleyball champion, beating Atletico VC de Famalicão in the fourth game of the play-off, 3-2, in a game played at the Sports and Congress Center of Matosinhos.
Playing at home, the 'mermaids' knocked out Famalicão's formation to the fourth game, avoiding the 'black' and continuing the dominance in national volleyball with the third title followed.
The Leixon won by 25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 20-25 and 15-11 in the deciding game and sealed the championship, increasing the dominance at the top of the national list: this was the 18th title, double of Benfica and Castêlo da Maia, both with nine.
In 2015/16, Matosinhos's formation ended a 25-year fast without being a champion, and coach Mário Martins admitted, quoted by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, that he had not "dreamed of being a champion once, let alone three" .
"We achieved this title against a team with excellent players and that made a brutal investment, but we with less investment managed to achieve our goals," he said before giving "congratulations to Atletico athletes."
