From 27th to 29th September, downtown Albufeira was the stage of the 1st Festival of Living Statues. Archimedes, Galileo, Pythagoras of Samos, Hildegard of Bingen, Leonardo Da Vinci, Ferdinand Magellan, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Ada Lovelace, Thomas Edison, Madame Curie, Albert Einstein, Arthur Eddington and Neil Armstrong it was the 16 personalities embodied by the living statues that animated the streets of the old center of Albufeira. Tourists and residents had the opportunity to meet the great scientists and prominent figures linked to knowledge who contributed to the advancement of civilization.

«We dedicated this first edition of the Festival to the Great Masters of Science and Knowledge. For the year we will choose another theme, always with the purpose of enhancing and beautifying this part of the city », said the mayor. José Carlos Rolo stated that "this is one of the annual events that we have prepared to animate the streets of central Albufeira and attract people to this noble area of ​​the county during the mid and low season."

At the inauguration of the Living Statues Festival, the mayor and members of his executive made a guided tour, led by the director of the Living Science Center of the Algarve, Cristina Veiga Pires. The visit aroused the interest of many tourists, who wanted to know the history of each of the personalities. «With this event we wanted to bring to the street the legacy that all these figures represented by the living statues left us. It is important to provide the population with information about our ancestors linked to science and knowledge, which have contributed so much to the current development, ”explained the mayor.

The Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters Fanfare and the Percutunes Percussion Orchestra animated the afternoons of the three-day Festival with street crumbling where the living statues landed for the public. Those who passed by had the opportunity to participate in guided tours and take polaroid photos with their favorite statues.
