Marcelo approves increases of 700 euros for judges, but criticizes salary gap with the police and military – Jornal Económico

The President of the Republic approved the salary increase of 700 euros of the salaries for the advising judges. The revision of the Statute of Judicial Magistrates, which mainly benefits magistrates in higher courts, was promulgated by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Tuesday, August 6.

This increase will allow the "higher echelons of the judiciary's career" to receive "higher basic salaries than the Prime Minister", which has been happening since 1990, according to a statement by the President of the Republic. “With the present diploma widens and this disparity is accentuated”, he emphasizes.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa justifies the approval of this diploma, with the fact that Parliament has approved this salary increase. “This fact corresponds to the parliamentary orientation of valorization, in absolute terms, of the Judiciary, which is understood and accepted. Hence the raison d'être of the promulgation of the diploma ”.

But the President of the Republic draws attention to “two other facts worthy of global and unavoidable consideration”.

“One is the multiplication of public officials with a basic salary higher than that of the Prime Minister, ranging from regulatory and supervisory authorities to public corporate entities and public companies, through other administrative entities,” says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

"The other, even more complex, is the accentuation of unequal treatment in relation to other careers with more obvious affinities, namely the Armed Forces and the Security Forces", criticizes the President of the Republic.

Finally, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says he hopes that wage inequality within the state itself will be resolved in the next government. "Certainly such inequality will be addressed in the next legislature."
