The head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, presides today at the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities, which start in Portalegre in the morning and end in Cape Verde on Tuesday.
In Portalegre, at 11:00 p.m., on Avenida das Forças Armadas, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will make his first speech in the presence of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, and the Prime Minister, António Costa.
The commemorations of the Day of Portugal began on Sunday, in the center of the city of Portalegre, with a ceremony of hoisting the national flag, occasion in which the head of State took advantage to defend that the 10 of June is in the first place an event that celebrates " the cult of the motherland, "stressing that the country cultivates its past, but it is a future-oriented project.
Before the journalists, the head of state defended the positive character of the results achieved with the model of double celebration instituted from 2016 on the commemorations of the Day of Portugal: first in national territory and then abroad.
"This model has awakened the country to a new reality. A new reality that was already old. It was worth celebrating June 10, however symbolic, outside our physical borders, but within our spiritual territory, "concluded the President of the Republic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled in this context that the current model of commemorations began in 2016, having been divided between Lisbon and Paris.
"We started in France From France, we went to Brazil. , from Brazil to the United States , and we are now going to Cape Verde. In the meantime, the participation of Portuguese communities spread around the world increased, and there was an extension of the right to vote in the sense of automatic census, vastly expanding the electoral universe outside the physical borders of the country, "said the President of the Republic in an allusion recent legislative changes at the level of the electoral system.
Also on Sunday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left for Porto, where he watched the Portuguese football team win the League of Nations final against the Netherlands.
This morning, at the Portalegre ceremony, the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca will also be present, and in the military parade there will be a Cape Verdean representation to participate together with the Portuguese Armed Forces.
Next, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa travels to the city of Praia with the Prime Minister, António Costa, and with the President of Cape Verde, where he will speak before representatives of the Portuguese community in this country, which is composed, in total, of about of 21 thousand people, spread over several Cape Verdean islands.
