Maritime Authority advises caution on going to the beach on long weekend - Diario diariOnline Região Sul

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) has recommended that the population opt for beaches that still have permanent assistance, redoubling the care in the long weekend that marks the end of the 2018 bathing season.

"Currently, air temperatures remain favorable to bathing, so the National Maritime Authority recommends that the population opt for beaches that still have permanent assistance, always adopting a culture of safety and prevention," says AMN.

The bathing season has already ended on most Portuguese beaches, so many beaches no longer have permanent assistance by swimmers, lack of signage and equipment to assist bathers, "it is therefore fundamental that the population adopt a behavior of safety, "says the Maritime Authority.

When attending the beach this last weekend of the 2018 bathing season, which officially ends on October 15, the National Maritime Authority recommends that in case of doubt regarding the state of the sea (ripples and agueiros) do not risk and do not go to baths; that it respects an interval of three hours after a normal meal before going to baths; never turn your back on the sea; watch your children permanently and at a close distance, not letting them play near the water line without supervision; and pay special attention to the agueiros, who can be fatal and cause death by drowning, asking for help and swimming sideways (parallel) to the coast line until the effect of the current is no longer felt, trying to leave the water in a place away from this current.
