Microsoft wants to protect it from people who insist on smoking in fuel pumps - Site of the day

The project is being partnered with Royal Dutch Shell and is being tested on two fuel pumps, one in Thailand and another in Singapore.

At the base of the system is the Azure IoT Edge artificial intelligence technology that, along with security cameras, identifies movements of those who prepare to smoke a cigarette, namely the gesture of taking the packet of tobacco from a pocket to smoke a cigarette.

Detecting that the images captured by the cameras that went into the Microsoft Azure cloud have such gestures – or when someone actually takes a cigarette to smoke – the platform issues an alert to warn the employees of the filling station.

The project is explained on this Microsoft blog page.
