This Saturday, the young Portuguese Miguel Gomes became champion of the singles of the Vale do Lobo Junior Open, an international Grade 5 tournament that is organized by Premier Sports at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy, in Loulé, having the title in the female team smiled at the Spanish Carolina Gomez.
One day after winning the pair title alongside his friend and training partner Henrique Rocha, Miguel Gomes – who is part of the team at the High Performance Center of the Portuguese Tennis Federation – took the status of first seed until the end (which results from the 185th place he occupies in the world ranking of juniors) by beating the national under-18 vice-champion, Tomás Luís (third pre-designated), by 7-5 and 7-5.
It was the fifth victory of the week for the 17-year-old from Alcobaça, the fourth stamped in direct partials. The title won at Vale do Lobo Junior Open is the third of the year and of his career for Gomes on the international circuit, after the triumphs in the Oporto Sistelmar Cup and in the Diogo Nápoles Cup, in September.
In the women's team, the 100% Spanish final smiled at the most highly rated of the players: at the age of 16, Carolina Gomez (473rd in the ITF table) applied the 6-0 and 6-3 partials to Marta Soriano Santiago, just 14 years old (!) and number 2026 worldwide.
On the eve, in pairs, the titles were given to two Portuguese doubles: Miguel Gomes and Henrique Rocha won (6-1 and 7-5 over Jaime Faria and Pedro Libório) and Mafalda Guedes and Matilde Morais won (6) -4 and 6-2 against the Bulgarian Yoana Dudova and the British Sashi Kempster).
