On January 18, at 3 pm, the Loulé Municipal Archive receives another session of “The Following Document”, this time with the presentation of a conference on the theme “Military Orders in Loulé in the dawn of Portuguese Overseas Expansion”.
Military Orders are not always connoted by Portuguese historiography as prominent agents of the Portuguese overseas project. The relationship does exist. Whether through their human agents, after all, the facilitators of any institution, whether through institutionalized action at the political, economic, material or military level, the Portuguese Military Orders, namely those of Santiago and Christ, have a role to play. active in Overseas Expansion. Loule, village and county, this is no exception. If the village itself can be called an inland locality, its county boundaries touch the ocean sea, assuming itself to be emporium land and sea trade.
The lecturer João Costa is a researcher at CHAM / NOVA and CEH-NOVA. PhD in Medieval History from NOVA / FCSH (2016), with the thesis “Palmela. Space and the people (12th-16th centuries) ”.
She is a research assistant in several international projects: “Sugar in Raging Waters: New Christians and Jews. Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands and the sugar trade – 1595-1618 (2010-2011) ”,“ Portugal in the Sea of Oman (2008-2017) ”and“ Portugal and UAE. Then and now (2017) ”. He is currently responsible for the project “A Misericórdia de Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo, from origins to the establishment of the Republic”.
