Ministers discuss fishing possibilities for 2019 - The Economic Newspaper

European Union (EU) fisheries ministers are discussing fishing opportunities by 2019 in a traditionally lengthy negotiation until an agreement can be reached between what Brussels proposes and what Member States want, including Portugal.

For Portugal, the European Commission proposes, in particular, a cut of 14% in catches of hake and another commercially relevant species, anglerfish, a rise of 2% over this year.

The national quotas for 2019 will include fish caught incidentally, which is no longer possible to return to the sea and must be landed.

The European Commission's proposal, in addition to being based on scientific advice, is aimed at achieving the management of all stocks at the level of Maximum Sustainable Income by 2020.
