MTV has announced that Missy Elliott will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards (MTV VMAs) ceremony taking place August 26 in New Jersey. The singer will also perform live, thus returning to the VMA stage for the first time since 2003.
With a legacy of over three decades, Elliott is one of the most influential artists in the music and hip hop industry in particular.
"Missy Elliot's impact on the music landscape is undeniable," said Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, Viacom and Co-Brand Head, MTV International. "His creative vision, from production to acting and composition, is unmatched," he adds.
Elliott has excelled as a producer, songwriter, singer and rapper throughout a career beginning in the late 1980s. Winner of 15 MTV VMAs and six Grammys, she has sold over 30 million records worldwide.
Earlier this year, she was named the first female hip hop artist to be part of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The singer has an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music and is the only female rapper with six platinum certified albums in the US.
Missy Elliott thus joins the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award-winning group of artists including Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Guns N 'Roses, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Rihanna and P! Nk.
