More than 7,700 rheumatoid arthritis patients followed by specialist - Current

The data were released by the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology (SPR) on the eve of National Patient Day with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a chronic and inflammatory rheumatic disease, characterized by inflammation of the joints and "may lead to destruction of joint and peri-articular tissue."

According to data from Reuma.pt, which has existed since 2008 and is, according to the SPR, "one of the essential tools in the follow-up and clinical improvement of patients in rheumatology consultations", last year 7,758 patients were identified by rheumatologists, the 5,002 of 2014.

The number of consultations also rose from 39,805 in 2014 to 80,819 in 2018, a growth that SPR considers to allow better control of the disease, although it must be remembered that much has to be done in Portugal to get time these patients to specialist.

According to the president of SPR, Luis Cunha Miranda, rheumatoid arthritis is a "chronic disease because it has no cure, but if it is effectively diagnosed and treated with follow-up in Rheumatology consultations, it has a good prognosis."
