The Association of Merchants of Praia de Monte Gordo, created this month, intends to further expand the tourist and economic projection of the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.
The new structure intends to defend the interests of traders and operators who are active in that bathing area and respond to the needs of the investments and business generated with the newly created footbridge.
Pedro Pires, president of the association, says that the structure is born, first of all, "to defend the interests of traders with the responsible entities and guardianship, guaranteeing the necessary strength for their representation and projection."
"We believe that, as an association, we can gain economies of scale and enhance all the rehabilitation work that has been carried out on the beach of Monte Gordo, measures which, moreover, are part of our bylaws," said the businessman in a statement.
In addition to these goals, the community intends to intervene at the level of promoting the bathing destination and its economic activities, in particular in neighboring Andalusia, taking advantage of existing community support lines and having associations.
In its first month of operation, the Association of Merchants of Praia de Monte Gordo wants to get to know the various entities involved on the beach, namely the Vila Real de Santo António Town Hall, Monte Gordo Parish Council, the Capitania, the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Tourism of Portugal.
In the future, the goals and projects will solve some of the issues generated by the use of the footbridge – which is also one of the largest investments made in that bathing area – namely safety, bicycle circulation, street vending and maintenance.
At the moment, the association is already fully formalized, and the governing bodies have been elected at the end of April, so that all businessmen and traders who work on the beach can already join.
