The mayor of Sines met yesterday morning with EDP Produção to «find solutions that minimize the impacts of the closure of the thermoelectric plant».
The meeting was attended by Miguel Mateus, director of EDP Produção, João Amaral, director of Central de Sines, and Adília Pereira, director of Human Resources at the company. During the meeting, the mayor also had the opportunity to speak to the CEO of EDP Produção, Miguel Setas, who "showed total openness on the part of the company in the search for solutions", according to a source account from the municipality.
The executive points out that «Nuno Mascarenhas has been in contact with several entities, namely unions, Institute of Employment and Professional Training, Institute of Social Security, State Secretariat of Energy, with the objective of discussing measures to mitigate the impacts of the closure of the thermoelectric plant '. A meeting was also agreed, to be held as a matter of urgency, between all entities that can contribute to the elaboration of public policy measures that minimize the social and economic impacts of this decision.
«EDP workers and Sinienses know the commitment that the Chamber has placed in defending their interests and the economic and social stability of this community. It is necessary to safeguard the future of hundreds of workers, not only those who operate directly at the plant, but also many others, who work in the sectors of activity associated with it », stressed the mayor. The closure of the plant is announced for January 2021 .
