Odeleite revives Singing the Janeiras tradition

Odeleite revives Singing the Janeiras tradition

The Odeleite Singing Group will tour the villages of the parish, in the municipality of Castro Marim, with the initiative "Let's sing the Janeiras", next weekend, days 4 and 5.

The Janeiras are songs known for translating the spirit of this holiday season, the family spirit – the message that the initiative aims to bring to the most isolated villages, providing a moment of communion and conviviality.

Taking advantage of the Mercadinho in the Village, on Sunday, 5th, the group will also sing the Janeiras at Casa de Odeleite, at 10:00 am, with the special collaboration of Charola da Mesquita.

At the same time, the initiative aims to revive this oral tradition, one of the richest areas of Portuguese popular songbook and still very expressive in the Algarve, where they are also known as charolas.

In these songs we find all the popular spirit and a lot of creativity, where religious loas alternate with popular courts of praise and derision.

“Let's sing the Janeiras” is an initiative of the Odeleite Singing Group, Odeleite Parish Council and Castro Marim City Council.
