Passenger movement at Faro Airport fell 75.5% in 2020


Passenger movement at national airports fell 69.4% in 2020, compared to 2019, to 18.4 million, registering the largest decrease (75.5%) at Faro Airport, according to INE.

“In the year 2020 as a whole (preliminary data), 100.2 thousand aircraft landed at national airports (-56% compared to 2019) and 18.4 million passengers were handled (-69.4%)”, released the INE today.

Lisbon airport handled 9.3 million passengers, 50.4% of the total, registering a drop of 70.3%.

Considering the three airports with the highest passenger traffic – Lisbon, Porto and Faro -, the Algarve registered the largest decrease in the number of passengers handled in 2020, with a drop of 75.5%.

Already considering the volume of passengers disembarked and embarked on international flights in 2020, France was the main country of origin and destination of flights (it occupied the second position in 2019), followed by the United Kingdom (first position in 2019), which registered the largest reduction in the number of passengers disembarked and embarked compared to the same period last year (-76.0% and -75.2%, respectively).

Spain showed the second largest decrease in both indicators and ranked fourth in 2020 (third in 2019).

In 2020, there was a decrease of 30.2% in the movement of cargo and mail at national airports, which reached 147,000 tons.

In an analysis to the last month of last year, INE found that 6,800 commercial aircraft landed at national airports, representing a decrease of 57.3%, after decreases of 61.4% in November and 51 , 9% in October.

Regarding the movement of passengers (boardings, arrivals and direct transits), which totaled one million, there was a decrease of 74.7% compared to December 2019 (-82.1% in November and -74.1% in October ).

In December, the movement of cargo and mail at national airports totaled 15,000 tons, corresponding to a decrease of 23.1% (-27.2% in November and -28.1% in October), but maintaining the recovery trend since April, the month in which the greatest decrease was registered (-62.6%).

Analyzing the monthly values ​​of 2020 for the three indicators, the INE verified that the biggest decreases compared to the same periods were registered in the months of April and May: falls of 94.5% and 92.7% in the landed aircraft, 99.4% and 98.5% in the movement of passengers and 62.6% and 55.5% in the movement of cargo and mail, respectively.

“Analyzing the number of aircraft landed and the number of passengers disembarked daily in 2020, and comparing with the same period, it is visible the impact of the measures adopted at the level of airspace from the beginning of the second half of March in the context of the pandemic of Covid-19. Despite the recovery in July and August, the trend was reversed from September. December saw a slight recovery, driven by the Christmas season ”, explained the statistical entity.
