Lagos celebrates October 27 Municipality Day, Municipal Holiday celebrated in honor of its Patron, São Gonçalo de Lagos. In addition to the initiatives of institutional and protocolary nature, which usually mark this day, the program of celebrations extends on other days where other cultural, sporting and recreational activities will also take place.
This year's celebrations, which run from October 26 to 28, begin in a more international spirit, considering that the first commemorative initiative concerns the Official Reception of the Ksar El Kebir (Alcácer Quibir) and formalization of the Twinning Agreement. The entourage will be received in the Auditorium of the Paços do Concelho 21st Century, on the 26th, at 11:30. It should be recalled in this regard that Lagos was reunited with Alcácer Quibir (Ksar El Kebir) earlier this year, and that the agreement was concluded during a visit to the Moroccan city by a delegation from Laos headed by the mayor, Maria Joaquina Matos. This Twinning Agreement has as main objective the development of permanent links between both Municipalities, leading to the deepening of knowledge of local cultural identities, in terms of traditions, customs, historical memory and heritage, to the exchange of cultural and heritage activities and events. and joint participation in projects of common interest.
On the 26th, at night, Paulo de Carvalho brings to the stage of the Cultural Center of Lagos the show INFORMAL.
The highlight of these celebrations will be on the 27th, Municipal Holiday, which includes the traditional ceremony of Hastear das Bandeiras, with hymns performed by the Lacobrigense Philharmonic Society Band 1º de Maio, starting at 9:30 am, in the Plaza Gil Eanes. For 10:00 am, the Religious Festivals of São Gonçalo de Lagos are marked with a Mass and the Procession in Honor of the Patron Saint. The solemn session, scheduled for 3:30 pm at the Cultural Center of Lagos, will be attended by representatives of twin towns and tributes to the writer Glória Marreiros and the athlete Diogo Marreiros, with attributions of awards under municipal regulation and, in this case concrete, provides for the award of the Municipal Gold Medal of Merit to the writer and social researcher Gloria Maria Marreiros da Cunha and the Municipal Merit Medal – Grau Prata to Diogo Trindade Marreiros, a lacobrigican Speed Skating athlete.
On this day, entrances to the municipal museums (Santo António Church, Slave Market and Ponta da Bandeira Fort) are free, as is the Ribeirinha Front Parking.
The celebrations end with the Commented Visit "To the Meeting of the Time and Places of São Gonçalo de Lagos", to be held on the 28th, and a show related to the 18th Meeting of Children and Youth Choirs, taking place at the Church of the Nuns at 3:30 p.m. .
