In the first three months of 2021, the Port of Sines maintained the growth trajectory shown at the end of the previous year, with 440,645 TEU handled in containers from January to March, representing a 16% year-on-year evolution, with containerized import and export cargo. to reach 104,391 TEU.
The aggregate of all cargo segments amounted to almost 12 million tons handled in the first three months of the year, representing a year-on-year growth of 10%, demonstrating that this port infrastructure did not register any relevant impacts following the recent crisis caused by the blockade of the Suez Canal.
The general cargo segment, which includes containers, recorded 5.6 million tons handled and contributed decisively to the overall results of the port. In the liquid bulk segment, which includes crude, refined and natural gas, there was a year-on-year growth of 4%, with more than 6 million tons handled, keeping Sines as the country's main port for energy products.
This positive quarter must be coupled with the resilience shown by the entire port community of Sines, which, in a context of a pandemic, made it possible to maintain supply chains in favor of the needs of the economy.
The values presented in these first three months make it possible to foresee yet another positive year for the Port of Sines, at a time when the expansion of the Container Terminal – Terminal XXI is taking place at a good pace, without any interference in the port's operation, and which will represent a capacity increase from 2.3 million to 4.1 million TEU per year.
