During this month Portimão will live the “September Yellow” campaign and join the event “September – Suicide Prevention Month”, through a set of activities and awareness actions promoted by the Psychiatric Service of the Portimão Hospital Unit, of the Algarve University Hospital Center (CHUA), with the support of the Municipality of Portimão.
These days several public buildings will put yellow stripes on their facades namely the Paços do Concelho building; Cruz da Midwife and Coca Maravilhas Community Centers and Portimão Senior Social Center; Village of Sobreiras and Bairro do Pontal; CPCJ- Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth of Portimão and the buildings of the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande, while the Portimão Museum will be illuminated in yellow tones, in a warning for this suicide prevention campaign.
The "Suicide Prevention Month" aims to raise awareness of suicide, a problem of some relevance in the Algarve. The initiatives in Portimão are part of the worldwide campaign organized by the International Suicide Prevention Association, which is supported in Portugal by the National Mental Health Plan, the Portuguese Suicidiology Society and the National Suicide Prevention Plan (PNPS). With the objective of transmitting knowledge on the subject, the Community Mental Health Teams will carry out various awareness actions among the community in general and in particular with the school community. Throughout the month, there is an exhibition in the lobby of the Portimão Hospital Unit, with information on depression, suicide prevention and reduction of stigma in mental illness.
Still within the scope of this awareness campaign Portimão will be the starting point for the 1st Bike Ride «Pedalar for Life», part of the worldwide initiative "Cycle around the globe", which will have two stages, scheduled for 14 and 21 September. , the first stage will connect Portimão and Monchique, passing by Lagoa and Silves, while the second stage will connect Portimão to Sagres, stopping in Lagos and Vila do Bispo.
