The Portugal Masters golf course, which was due to take place between April 29 and May 2 in Vilamoura, has been postponed due to the travel limitations caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the European Tour announced today.
“All the members of the tournament, both in Portugal and on the European Tour, worked hard to bring about the event that has been an important part of our calendar since 2007. Unfortunately, it was simply not possible to organize the event next month, so now we are to analyze the possibility of rescheduling it sometime later this year ”, informed the executive director of the European circuit, Keith Pelley.
Thus, the scheduled date for the tournament at the Dom Pedro Victoria golf course will be taken over by the Tenerife Open, which moves from its original date from April 15th to 18th, for which the European Tour is still looking for an alternative event in Europe.
“We are obviously disappointed with the continuing challenges of international travel that led to the postponement of the Portugal Masters”, he reinforced, without giving any alternative dates to the Portuguese race.
The official argues that the date change to the Tenerife Open, which will take place the week after the Gran Canaria Open “facilitates travel across continental Europe before the French Open”.
"We are also trying to find a replacement event elsewhere in Europe so that, between April 15th and 18th, we can give our members a full schedule and game opportunities," he concluded.
The Portuguese race had been brought forward to the spring, recovering monetary prizes of 1.5 million euros.
