THE Portuguese U-17 soccer team today beat Iceland 4-2 on Matchday 3 group C of the European Championship, and ensured the passage to quarter-finals.
In Longford, Emílio Peixe's side, who had lost on Matchday 1 with Hungary and defeated Russia 2-1 in the second round, needed to win to make it to the next stage, while the Icelandic side had a draw.
The lusa team advanced to 32 minutes for Bruno Tavares, Iceland equalized through Johannesson at 37, Fábio Silva replaced Portugal ahead at 46, for Ellertsson at 71, giving new hope to the Icelanders. Paulo Bernardo, at 76, and Filipe Cruz, at 84, scored goals that allowed Portugal to qualify for the next phase.
In a group that won the Hungarian title – it was a triumph – Portugal secured the second place and will play in the quarterfinals against Group D, leaving today's match between Italy and Spain.
