Portuguese Avelino Andrade won the silver medal in the BC3 class at the Dubai Boccia World Open on Monday when he was defeated in the final by Australian Daniel Michel 5-2.
The boccia is a modality that consists in throwing balls trying to leave them as close as possible to a target ball, and is destined to athletes with motor deficiency – cerebral palsy in wheelchair or neuromuscular diseases -, that can be disputed individually, in pairs or teams of three elements, without division by gender.
In the modality, designated by the initials BC, athletes are divided into four classes, numbered 1 to 4. Classes 1 and 2 are intended for athletes who play with the hand or with the foot, 3 groups the athletes who play with aid and to 4 practitioners suffering from neuromuscular diseases.
