Portuguese car market closes 2020 with a 33.9% drop


According to data obtained by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP), in the last month of 2020, 18,290 vehicles were registered by the legal representatives of the brand operating in Portugal, that is, 19.4 percent less than in the same period. month of the previous year.

Throughout 2020, 176,992 new vehicles were put into circulation, representing a year-on-year decrease of 33.9 percent.

By categories and types of vehicles, according to ACAP, in December 2020, 14,252 new light passenger cars were registered in Portugal, that is, 19.6 percent less than in the same month of the previous year. From January to December, passenger car registrations totaled 145,417 units, which translated into a negative variation of 35.0 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

In relation to the light goods market, in December 2020, it registered an unfavorable evolution, having decreased 19.1 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, standing at 3,673 registered units. In cumulative terms, in the twelve months of 2020, the market reached 27,578 units, which represented a drop of 28.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

With regard to the heavy vehicle market, which includes types of passengers and goods, in the last month of 2020 there was a 15.7 percent drop compared to the same month of the previous year, with 365 vehicles being sold this category. In 2020 enrollments totaled 3,997 units, which represented a market drop of 28.3 percent compared to the same period in 2019.
