The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today considered “a good surprise” the European Commission's forecast of 2% economic growth in Portugal this year, an upward revision that surpasses the Government's forecast.
“The 2% to me, I confess to you, surprised me from the European Commission. I had the notion that the economy was holding up better than some expected in the middle of the year, when there seemed to have been a small slowdown in tourism that there was not in June and July, ”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The head of state, speaking outside the Web Summit in Parque das Nações, Lisbon, added: “So the 2% is a big surprise for me, not only because it is above the European average, but especially because I feared in the second half of the year would tend to decline and fall short of government forecasts. ”
Regarding 2020, the President of the Republic said that “the forecasts are all very pessimistic from the European Commission for the whole of Europe, for the euro area, and therefore also for a slowdown in the Portuguese case” and concluded: “Let's see the What's up".
