Armindo dos Santos Alves, cousin of the Environment Minister, Carlos Martins, resigned on Wednesday, in what is the first departure from family relations in the Government of António Costa. The online newspaper "Observer" reveals that the official source of the Ministry says that "the Minister of Environment was not aware of the existence of this family relationship" and that, after analyzing the situation, "Deputy Armindo Alves presented his resignation today."
Armindo dos Santos Alves, had been appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment as his deputy in the office in September 2016, according to the order published in "Diário da República".
Family relations in the Government of António Costa have increased in the last week, when the online newspaper indicated that the number of family relations in the Government involves a total of 50 people and 20 families, as well as an ex-couple.
Last Saturday in an interview with "TSF" and "Dinheiro Vivo", the prime minister, António Costa, devalued the accounts made to the number of socialists with family relations in the Government, saying that this in itself was not a motive to stop naming someone.
"I can not accept this criterion that someone is only because he is a family member who is closer to or remote from a member of the Government or a militant of the PS than this means incapacity to perform a function in a cabinet," said António Costa.
