The Prime Minister, António Costa, guaranteed today that the 1st Portuguese football league and “similar leagues” will remain in activity during the new general confinement, due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“With regard to sports activities, the [restrições e encerramentos] leisure activities are maintained, with exceptions in the same regime of March and April. About the Professional League [de futebol] and leagues similar to professionals, are kept in activity, obviously without an audience ”, declared António Costa at the end of the meeting of the Council of Ministers, during which the measures for the new confinement were decided.

According to a document distributed during the briefing by the Head of Government, individual exercise will be allowed outdoors, with gyms and other closed sports venues.

The other point dedicated to sport points out that “national teams and the first senior division without an audience” can continue in activity, without this clarifying whether it refers to all modalities and to both male and female competition genders.

The ninth State of Emergency was approved today in parliament and goes into effect on Thursday, remaining in effect until January 30.

Portugal today surpassed the 500 thousand cases of infection with the new coronavirus registered since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

According to the DGS epidemiological bulletin, with the registration of 10,556 new cases in the last 24 hours, Portugal today reached 507,108 confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus, which causes the covid-19 disease.
