José Carlos Barros and Cristóvão Norte, the PSD deputies elected by the Algarve, presented in the Assembly of the Republic a draft resolution calling on the government to intervene urgently at the archaeological site of Ribat de Arrifana.
It should be remembered that this Ribat – classified in 2013 as National Monument – is the only one existing in the country and the second one discovered in the Iberian Peninsula, after that of Guardamar, located in the old delta of the Segura river in Alicante.
According to José Carlos Barros, "the state of abandonment and accelerated degradation of this national monument is unacceptable", reason why it needs an urgent intervention with view "to halt the process of degradation of the monument", beginning with an action of cleaning and of archaeological structures.
In this sense, the draft resolution of the PSD requires the Ministry of Culture to ensure, as a matter of urgency, the cleaning, deforestation, consolidation and restoration of the archaeological site; and the creation and renovation of protective structures, ensuring the integrity of the buildings belonging to the built complex of the ribat of the Islamic era and the buildings belonging to the reoccupation of the site in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
In addition to the provision of signs and information on the archaeological site, the PSD further recommends that the government comply with the legal obligation to develop an annual maintenance plan and an inspection plan and to develop an overall plan for intervention in the Ribat Arrifana in the sense of its defense, valorization, scientific study and investigation.
