Retail sales in January increased 2.2% in the euro area and 2.5% in the European Union (EU) year on year, with Portugal growing above both averages (5.6%), reports or Eurostat.
Compared to December 2018, retail sales volume increased by 1.3% in the euro area and 1.1% in the EU, and by more than 1.5% in the number of days in Portugal. .
According to the European Statistical Office, the biggest increases in retail sales were in Slovenia (11.0%), Ireland (8.1%) and Romania (6.7%). two retreats were observed: Finland (-1.3%) and Denmark (-0.3%).
Compared to the previous month, in January it was in Germany and Malta (3.3% each) as well as Estonia and Romania (1.9% each) that the indicator more advanced.
On the other hand, Finland (-2.1%), Slovenia (-1.0%), Denmark and Austria (-0.7% each) and Belgium (-0.4%) volume of retail sales decline compared to December 2018.
