This is a 60 year old story. A good story to add. That of an entrepreneur, Aninhas Peixeira, who, without knowing how to read and write, gave her name to a restaurant that still exists today. In Peso da Régua, Manel da Aninhas maintains regional dishes such as cod on fire, roasted goat on the fire.

It all started six decades ago, when Aninhas Peixeira, as it was known in Régua, left the fish market in the square to dedicate itself to its first business. He rented a small space where he is now the present restaurant and made it a little shop where he sold marinated sardines, roasted or fried, accompanied by wine by the glass.

In 1978, he bought the land around his tent and built a house with the restaurant underneath, as it is known today. At that time, the typical Portuguese food was already dish of the day, but the specialty of the house everyone knew were the guts in the fashion of Aninhas.

Not knowing how to read or write and explaining how only she knew, from left to right, Aunt Aninhas left a legacy the family wanted to preserve. In 1988, he left leaving the restaurant to his nephew, already known at the time by Manel da Aninhas, who kept it open until the present day.

Now, in 2018, the two sons of Manel and their respective wives decided that the legacy could not stop here. They have done works to make the space more comfortable and more modern, ensuring the quality of always and all the tradition left by Tia Aninhas and her Manel.

In the middle of Peso da Régua, two steps away from a panoramic view of the Douro River, the new Manel da Aninhas Restaurant has kept the great specialties – cod on the fire, roasted goat, Portuguese stew, tripe feijoada – and added a touch of modernity.

The new owners, in their 30s, want to avenge in this restaurant that has more than six decades, proving that the interior, and especially the Douro Vinhateiro, is, increasingly, a point of passage (and fixation) for the age groups and for tourists.
