Santiago do Cacém City Council supports 11 athletes from the municipality


Last week, the Santiago do Cacém City Council allocated a total of about 5,000 euros, distributed among eleven athletes from the municipality, allowing to support the development of their activities.

According to the municipality, these athletes “develop a work with great sporting relevance, in terms of training and competition” and stand out for “their participation in national and international events”.

The program contracts for the allocation of funds were signed with the athletes: Ana Filipa Santos (tennis), Barbara Magro (motorcycle), Bruno Rosa (MTB), Flávio Pacheco (handcycle and paracyclism), Luís Matos (athletics and trail runnning), Marco Ferreira (motor racing – rally), Paulo Morais (athletics and trail running), Pedro Fragoso (motorcycle racing), Pedro Matos (motorcycle racing), Pedro Trindade (triathlon) and Roberto Baião (trail running).

The money, besides helping the athletes expenses, also goes through the technical support, logistic and infrastructures necessary for the development of their activity of the athletes, according to the availability of the municipality.

“This is the way the chamber found to support individual athletes. Fortunately, we have a very eclectic municipality, in terms of sports, ”said the mayor of Santiago do Cacém, Álvaro Beijinha.

“The purpose of this program agreement is to support athletes who are nationally and internationally prominent and who promote the name of the municipality. We are aware that this contribution, in many cases, falls far short of the actual expenses of each athlete. The amount awarded is subject to apportionment every year and from year to year the number of athletes supported has been increasing, ”he added.

Individual athletes with legal residence in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém may apply for municipal support. Their sporting activity, through its expression and representativeness, may constitute a stimulus for the practice of sport, and which fit into the following groups: athlete with or without any ties to a club due to the intrinsic characteristics of the sport practiced; athlete who participates in events / championships with national and / or international character.

To qualify for the support provided for in the Regulation for Financial Support to Individual Athletes of the Municipality of Santiago do Cacém, interested athletes must submit their application in writing, accompanied by the respective documents provided for in the Regulation, during January 2020.
