The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, sponsored today, in Vila Real de Santo António, the launching of the vessel «Mar Profundo», which represented an investment of 869 thousand euros.
The official highlighted the launching of a vessel to the sea for validation and testing of marine technologies as an example of how the construction of scientific infrastructures will “mobilize the national industry”.
“This work has a very special meaning because it was built by a Portuguese company”, stressed Manuel Heitor, adding that the collaboration demonstrated in this project “is the true example of how a scientific infrastructure can be built in Portugal instead of imported from abroad ”.
Launched on the International Day of Innovation and Creativity, the vessel «Mar Profundo» was built in the shipyards of the company Nautiber, in Vila Real de Santo António, at the request of INESC TEC – Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science, “In a collaboration that must be replicated by other companies and national institutions”, stressed the minister.
Financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Northern Regional Operational Program, as well as by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through national funds, the vessel must serve “to mobilize the national industry” for the design of knowledge.
"INESC TEC now has the function of equipping the ship so that it can be placed at the service of the scientific community in general, but to value Portugal in the world," added the minister.
