UGT Secretary General Carlos Silva insisted today that budgetary rigor should be reconciled with salary expectations of the civil service and declared to the Government that its union center is "always on the side of the solution".
Carlos Silva was speaking at a meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the General Union of Workers (UGT) at the headquarters of this trade union center in Lisbon, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Minister of Labor, Vieira da Silva, and the Secretaries of State for Employment, Miguel Cabrita, and the Public Administration, Maria de Fátima Fonseca, to whom he addressed.
"Madam Secretary of State, we are all called to find solutions that combine the rigor of public accounts and the just and legitimate expectations of Public Administration workers. We are all available to find a solution, "he said, after referring to the public service strike on Friday.
Carlos Silva further reinforced this message by addressing the Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security and the Secretary of State for Employment: "Well know Minister Vieira da Silva and the Secretary of State for Employment, Miguel Cabrita, that the UGT always stands, always on the side of the solution. That's how it was for the last 40 years. That will continue to be. It is a solemn oath of the Secretary General. "
Carlos Silva described the UGT as a trade union center with "40 years of investment in a culture of commitment, in defense of social dialogue and concertation, investment in peace and political stability, against all those who wanted the exclusive representation of trade union Portuguese workers "In an allusion to the CGTP.
"Mr President of the Republic, I solemnly reaffirm, 40 years later, the ardent desire for freedom and democratic pluralism. This is the voice of the UGT, with its moderate posture and persecutor of consensuses, as more heartfelt expressions of this reality to which Portugal has become accustomed in the last 40 years, our culture of commitment, in defense of Portuguese and Portuguese workers, without distorting or give in essentially, "he said.
As for the strike this Friday, convened by the Common Front of the CGTP, which was joined by unions of the public service of the UGT, pointed it as a moment of "unity in action" and "fight and demand for better conditions of life and work, after ten bitter years without salary increases and with their frozen careers with no resolution acceptable to the eye. "
In his address, Carlos Silva also addressed the Secretary of State for the Appreciation of the Interior, João Catarino, also present at this commemorative session, to whom he promised that "he can count on the UGT in this new design in the discourse and in the political praxis" of combat territorial asymmetries, but "ancient in the will of the people who live there".
