The Secretary of State for the Appreciation of the Interior, João Paulo Catarino, said today in Pedrógão Grande that in the next legislature he would like to see the tolls abolished in the more economically fragile interior areas.

"In the next government program, what I would like to see reflected is the abolition of tolls in some areas of the interior that are more fragile in economic terms, obviously aware of the budgetary contingency that we live in," he said.

João Paulo Catarino, who was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Re-Nascer Summity Agenda congress, pointed out that "the roads that serve those territories must obviously have this reduction of context costs, which is brutal, and in some cases must be abolished when we have conditions for this. "

Asked about the possibility of the Government creating a specific operational program for low-density territories, the Secretary of State said that the situation was resolved in the reprogramming of the community framework, where 800 million euros were allocated exclusively to inland territories.

"The government responded and this question I think is outdated," said the official, who advocates a look on the interior to "see which regions are more fragile from the economic and social point of view to have specific territories for these territories."

In essence, he added, "having an integrated territorial-based action would call it a closer look with local actors," calling on "municipalities and the central administration to design a governance model for such a program, and which I believe we will achieve in the next Community framework. "
