Helping the fishermen of Azenha do Mar, in the municipality of Odemira, who saw their boats hit by the fire that occurred on the night of May 6, in the village fishing port, is the objective of the Solidarity Campaign that is being developed together community and local entrepreneurs.
The fire of unknown origin destroyed and / or damaged six vessels and further damaged some equipment in the fishing port. Of the eleven vessels stationed there that night, two were totally consumed by the flames and four others suffered damages of different grades, the total loss being estimated at about 100 thousand euros.
The Solidarity campaign includes a set of fundraising initiatives that will revert to the acquisition and / or repair of the affected vessels, including the São João Mast at Azenha do Mar (June 23rd, with free sardine and musical animation ), a large caldeirada in the Fair and Exhibition Park in S. Teotónio in the scope of the Mastros Festival (June 28, with previous registrations), as well as the participation in FACECO – Fair of Cultural and Economic Activities of the Municipality of Odemira, in July 19, 20, 21, through a restaurant with traditional food and snacks, in which a percentage of the revenue will be donated to the fishing community affected by the fire. Support will also be sought from local companies.

The campaign is launched on May 31, National Fisherman's Day, which marks the publication of Decree-Law 15/97 that established the first legal regime of the contract of work on board fishing vessels and which enshrines basic social rights for the fishermen.
Azenha do Mar is a small fishing community that operates with small vessels and uses fishing gear associated with artisanal fishing.
The campaign resulted from the partnership between the Parish Council of S. Teotónio, Municipality of Odemira, Cultural and Development Association of Fishermen and Residents of Azenha do Mar and the owners of affected vessels.
