Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos revealed yesterday, September 9, evening, in an interview with RTP3's 'Everything is Economy' program, that the Government intends to renegotiate the concession agreement with ANA to include in the project to Montijo airport to build a pipeline to supply fuel to these infrastructures, if authorized by APA – Portuguese Environment Agency.
O [aeroporto do] Montijo was not in the contract negotiated with ANA, but we will have to reopen this dossier, because it makes no sense for a new airport not to have the pipeline connection too, so as not to be dependent. And because it's cleaner, environmentally safer to do the shipping [de combustível] in the pipeline than with hundreds of lorries, ”explained the official.

According to this news, "if it is built as planned at this time, the future Montijo airport will only have fuel autonomy for three days."

“Truly, I would say that we have to increasingly migrate from highway to railway. I have been hard hit by the railroad of people, of goods, but also of fuel. We know that the centuries-old problem of the country that is not solved is the imbalance of its external balance. There are many ways. This is a big debate. But one of the components that weighs most on our imports is fossil fuels, which we don't have here. The energy transition fulfills several objectives. One of them is to reduce the dependence on road and fuel transportation ”, defended the Minister of Infrastructure.
About the possibility of building a pipeline for Faro airport, Pedro Nuno Santos was more cautious.
“This possibility is not yet studied [de oleoduto]. The fuel is transported to Faro airport by rail to the Algarve, and then transported by truck. It is a minor dislocation, but it is still made. This case will be more difficult because it has less consumption than it has [aeroporto] Humberto Delgado, but obviously we also have to find in the future, in the future, an answer to Faro airport. We are talking about a bigger investment for a less busy airport ”, warned the Minister of Infrastructure.
