Videoconferencing session brought together about 30 young “deputies”, representing nine schools in the district
Six students from schools in Faro, Olhão and Albufeira won the district session of the «Youth Parliament 2019/2021» for secondary education, held by videoconference at the beginning of the week.
The session brought together about 30 young “deputies”, representing nine schools in the district: Escola Profissional Cândido Guerreiro, from Alte (Loulé); João de Deus Secondary School (Faro); Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School (Portimão); Dr.ª Laura Ayres Secondary School (Quarteira, Loulé); Júlio Dantas Secondary School (Lagos); Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes Secondary School (Olhão); Albufeira Secondary School; Tomás Cabreira Secondary School (Faro); and Escola Secundária de Loulé.
Young people debated domestic violence
The young students debated the theme chosen by the Assembly of the Republic for this year's edition of the program, «Domestic and Dating Violence: How to guarantee respect and equality».
Measures were approved “that the young people of the Algarve propose to be taken into account by the Assembly of the Republic”.
The "deputies" of the Algarve "demonstrated a great capacity for intervention, reflection and critical spirit in the defense of their ideas, already showing a very appreciable maturity", stresses the organization.
The district session was attended by the regional director of the IPDJ Algarve, Custódio Moreno, the Mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, and the deputy Cristóvão Norte, elected by the Algarve, who at the beginning of the session answered questions from students about the duties and functioning of the parliament.
Students qualified for national session
For the national session, scheduled for June 14th and 15th, at the Assembly of the Republic, the Algarve will be represented by students Ana Taís Silva and Bárbara Fernandes, from João de Deus Secondary School; Francisco Fernandes Marreiros (spokesman for the district of Faro) and Diogo Miguel Ventura Simão, from Escola Secundária Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes; and Bruno Barreto and Catarina Silva, from the Albufeira Secondary School.
This is an initiative of the Assembly of the Republic, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, aiming to encourage young people's interest in civic and political participation.
