The Municipal Museum of Tavira will reopen on Monday, 18th, International Museum Day, with the opening, at 11:00 am, of the exhibition «The Main of the Kingdom of the Algarve – Tavira in the 15th and 16th centuries», with online transmission .
The moment has the interventions of the Mayor of Tavira, Ana Paula Martins, the head of the Division of Culture, Heritage and Museums, Jorge Queiroz, as well as the staged reading of the Letter of D. Manuel I by the actor Vitor Correia.
«The Principal of the Kingdom of the Algarve – Tavira in the 15th and 16th centuries» is a commemorative exhibition, held with multidisciplinary research and scientific, educational and didactic grounds, which seeks to explain, in a synthetic and accessible way, the political, social, economic and that led D. Manuel I to raise Tavira to the city in March 1520.
This was carried out with the collaboration of two dozen specialists who participated in the preparatory seminars, supported by several Portuguese museums, libraries and archives.
Visitors will find historical documentation, royal letters, books and ancient cartography, maps and plans, measurement objects, works of art from the 15th and 16th centuries, navigation instruments and ship replicas, a chain mail and diverse military weaponry, reproduction of one of Pastrana's tapestries, among many other informative elements.
Also available at the Municipal Museum of Tavira are the exhibitions «Mediterranean Diet, Millenary Cultural Heritage» (Palácio da Galeria), as well as «Islamic Tavira» and «The writing of Baixo Alentejo, from its origins to our days» (Nucleus Islamic).
Those interested can visit the Municipal Museum of Tavira, from Tuesday to Saturday, between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm.
The opening of this space is subject to the aspects of individual security and maximum capacity in the rooms in accordance with the rules issued by the General Directorate of Health, the use of a mask being mandatory.
