There are 167 thousand more passes in Lisbon and Porto since the reduction of prices – The Economic Journal

More 167 thousand passes; EUR 116 million from the State and local authorities to reduce the value of passenger passes; fewer cars in the cities; and an investment of 900 million euros in new equipment for public transport. Here are some indicators that the Secretary of State for Mobility, José Mendes, refers to the Economic Journal in the interview in which he makes the initial assessment of the public strategy for sustainable mobility.

What is your assessment of the new strategy for sustainable mobility?
At the heart of the new sustainability mobility policies is public transport. Because it is the most efficient and most effective in reducing the energy load and the carbonic charge of each passenger / km transported. In addition, there is the effort to decarbonize vehicle engines and this brings sustainability because it reduces greenhouse gas emissions. There is also a focus on smooth mobility, or micro mobility, that allows us to travel in modes that are either motorized or are very low energy or 'zero emissions': the cycling mode – and all its variants of the bike to trottinet – or the pedestrian mode. But public transport is at the heart of the strategy for sustainable mobility. It is a shared car at its peak. Then we will decarbonize the engines through the program of electric mobility (although with future variants such as hydrogen, for which we have been very attentive).

What differentiates the sustainable mobility strategy from the current Government?
What sets us apart from previous governments is that this theme is much more present in the current debate than it was in the past. Being more present in the current debate, it is natural that it should be a higher priority. Clearly we have an approach to mobility, and especially public transport, which differentiates itself [do governo anterior] because we think that just by investing, by increasing people's access to public transport, we can increase sustainability and address the issue of climate change and global warming. If we compare with the previous legislature, this clearly was not on the agenda. It was completely out, it was a theme that did not exist and that now exists.
