At least six investors, mainly multinationals, were interested in planting cannabis in the Alqueva parish, belonging to the municipality of Portel, writes the "Public" in this Friday's edition.
According to the president of the Development and Infrastructure Company of Alqueva (EDIA), the psychoactive substance tetrahydrocannabinol attracts those interested, who intend to use it later for therapeutic or recreational purposes. "Investors, especially multinationals, understand that cannabis production can make a lot of money. (…) They believe that the demand for this cannabinoid will increase to be used in medicinal and recreational consumption in a growing number of countries, "Pedro Salema told the same newspaper.
The news comes at a time when there are already counted two countries that approved the use of the plant for recreational purposes: Uruguay and, more recently, Canada. In Portugal, the use of drugs, preparations and substances based on the cannabis plant was approved by the Assembly of the Republic on June 15 in the final overall vote of a text of the parliamentary health committee originated by bills of the Left Bloc and PAN. The President of the Republic promulgated the diploma on 10 July.
