Three Portuguese move forward at Vale do Lobo Open II

Guaranteed the presence of at least one Portuguese tennis player in the singles quarter-finals of the $ 25,000 tournament

The start of the main group of singles from Vale do Lobo Open II Magnesium-K Active was today marked by the triumphs of Pedro Araújo, Francisco Cabral and Gonçalo Falcão.

The three tennis players reserved seats in the 2nd round of the tournament, which distributes $ 25,000 in prize money and which Premier Sports organizes with the support of the Portuguese Tennis Federation at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy.

Invited by the organization to the main group of singles, Francisco Cabral (1114th in the ATP ranking) was the first tennis player to advance: the absolute national vice-champion of 2015, 2016 and 2019 led 4-2 in the first match when Frenchman Maxime Hamou (372th ATP and second seed) withdrew due to physical problems.

Shortly afterwards, Gonçalo Falcão (1343º) also moved on. Fresh from the qualifying round, the 33-year-old Portuguese defeated the Austrian qualifier Peter Goldsteiner (1045th) by the 6-2 and 6-3 partials, to add up to his first major tournament singles in international tournaments since November 2019 in Nules (Spain).

Cabral and Falcão will fight on Thursday

With these results, it was automatically guaranteed the presence of at least one Portuguese in the singles quarter-finals, since Cabral and Falcão will face each other this Thursday.

The round ended with Pedro Araújo's (1154th) triumph over the German Lucas Gerch (465th), with the 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4 partials.

In the second round, the national under-18 champion will face Lucas Poullain (501st), a Frenchman who left the Portuguese Gastão Elias (355th) on the way, winning 6-1 and 6-3.

In addition to Gastão Elias, two other Portuguese stood in the way on Wednesday's journey: Tiago Cação (555th) failed to counter the favoritism of Belgian Christopher Heyman (422nd and eighth seed), who won by 6 -3 and 6-2, and Fábio Coelho (1353º), who took the place of the Russian Alen Avidzba (champion in Faro, on Sunday), lost by the 6-1 and 6-4 partials to the German Sebastian Fanselow ( 435), who also defeated him the week before.

On Thursday, the second round matches and the quarter finals of the pairs are also scheduled, with emphasis on two duels with the Portuguese involved.

Francisco Cabral and Pedro Araújo will face the French Alexis Musialek and Hugo Pontico, while Gonçalo Falcão and Turkish Tuna Altuna will face Spaniards Jordi Mas de Ugarte and Jose Joaquin Miranda Cisneros.

The Vale do Lobo Open II Magnesium-K Active takes place between the 7th and the 14th of March at the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy's fast floor courts in Loulé, and ends a series of three consecutive weeks of tennis at the highest level in the south from the country.
