Two-wheel and quadricycle market grew 24.5% in June


In June 2020, the market for official brand representatives operating in Portugal, for new two-wheel vehicles, tricycles and quadricycles, registered a growth of 24.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, having registered 4,339 units, according to data obtained by ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal.

In cumulative terms, in the first half of 2020, 13,877 vehicles were registered in Portugal, which corresponded to a year-on-year decrease in the number of units registered by 15.4 percent.

In an individualized analysis by the main types of vehicles, in the referred period, ACAP observes that the market for new mopeds registered by the official representatives of the brands totaled 165 units in June 2020, having presented a negative variation of 6.3 percent compared to the month year-on-year. In accumulated terms, in the first six months of the year, 701 mopeds were registered, which translated into a decrease of 24.9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

As for the motorcycle market, 4,109 units were registered in Portugal in June 2020, representing an increase of 27.7 percent compared to the same month in 2019. In cumulative terms, from January to June 2020, the number of registered units fell 14.3 percent compared to the same period last year, with 12,735 new motorcycles being put into circulation.

With regard to motorcycles with a cylinder capacity up to 125 cm3, in June 2020, there were a total of 2,364 units registered in Portugal, which represented an increase of 33.2 percent compared to the same month of 2019. Regarding the cumulative number of motorcycles up to 125 cm3 registered in the six months of 2020, this stood at 6,665 units, which represented a 10.1 percent drop compared to the same period last year.

With regard to motorcycles with a cylinder capacity greater than 125 cm3 put into circulation for the first time in Portugal, in June 2020, there were a total of 1,745 units, which represented a growth of 21 percent compared to the same month of 2019. In cumulative terms, in the first half of 2020, registrations for this type of vehicles totaled 6,070 units, which resulted in a contraction of 18.5 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

With regard to the quadricycle market, it stood at 52 units registered in June 2020, which represented a decrease of 13.3 percent compared to the same month of 2019. From January to June 2020, quadricycle registrations registered a a 27 percent drop compared to the same period last year, with 378 quadricycles enrolled.
