Two-wheel market grows for the third consecutive month in Portugal


Although globally, from January to August, the market for official brand representatives operating in Portugal, for new two-wheel vehicles, tricycles and quadricycles, fell by 7.3 percent in August, growth of 6.8 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, having registered 3,704 units, according to ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal.

In cumulative terms, in the eight months of 2020, 22,713 vehicles were registered in Portugal, which corresponded to a year-on-year decrease in the number of units registered by 7.3 percent.

In an individualized analysis by the main types of vehicles, in the referred period, it was observed that the market for new mopeds registered by the official representatives of the brands totaled 301 units in August 2020, having presented a positive variation of 46.1 percent compared to the month 2019 counterpart.

In cumulative terms, from January to August 2020, 1,238 mopeds were registered, which translated into a 14.2 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

Regarding the motorcycle market, in August 2020, 3,317 units were registered in Portugal, representing an increase of 4.4 percent compared to the same month of 2019.

In cumulative terms, from January to August 2020, the number of registered units decreased 6.3 percent compared to the same period last year, with 20,841 new motorcycles being put into circulation.

As for motorcycles with a cylinder capacity up to 125 cm3, in August 2020, there were a total of 1,924 units registered in Portugal, representing a growth of 4.8 percent compared to the same month of 2019.

Regarding the cumulative number of motorcycles up to 125 cm3 registered in the eight months of 2020, this stood at 11,399 units, which represented a drop of 2.0 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

With regard to motorcycles with a cylinder capacity greater than 125 cm3 put into circulation for the first time in Portugal, in August 2020, there was a total of 1,393 units, which represented an increase of 3.9 percent over the same month in 2019.

In cumulative terms, from January to August 2020, registrations of this type of vehicles totaled 9,442 units, which translated in a decrease of 11.1 percent in relation to the same period of 2019.

Finally, with regard to the quad bike market, it stood at 61 units registered in August 2020, which represented a decrease of 12.9 percent compared to the same month of 2019.

From January to August 2020, the enrollment of quadricycles fell by 25.9 percent compared to the same period last year, with 513 quadricycles being registered.
