The International Cyclist Union (UCI) will analyze requests for rescheduling of events postponed in 2021, including the Volta ao Algarve, and will communicate its decisions by the end of March, the institution announced.
“To date, 38 events have been canceled in 2021, at the male and female professional level (class 1 and above). While some of them are definitively canceled and will not occur before 2022, others have asked to be rescheduled for a later date in 2021. This is the case for 24 events, ”says UCI, in a statement.
The institution revealed that "it will analyze the requests of these organizers in close collaboration with the different interested parties", setting the new dates in a perspective of "general coherence of the calendar and in the general interest of cycling".
The decisions will be communicated "by the end of March," added the UCI, whose officials met on Thursday, in videoconference format, with representatives of the professional road cycling agents – organizers, teams and cyclists.
“The participants welcomed the fact that the 2021 cycling season has already started and that several high-level events are taking place thanks to the implementation and respect for extremely strict and effective health protocols”, concluded the UCI.
The Volta ao Algarve, organized by the Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC), was scheduled for the period of 17 and 21 February, but was postponed on 21 January.
At the time, the FPC advanced the dates from May 5 to 9 for its realization, maintaining that the recalendarization depended on consensus between teams and partners involved, in addition to being accepted by the UCI.
