Raphael Jório dos Santos, Vitor Augusto Biasi and Pedro Cavaco Luz, students of the 3rd year of the degree course in Electrical and Computer Engineering, from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia of the University of Algarve, were one of the finalist teams of the Top-five of the EDP University Challenge 2020 contest.
Aimed at young people in higher education in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, Italy and Belgium, the competition is an international initiative by EDP with the aim of encouraging students to apply their academic knowledge in the development of a project focused on a theme related to the EDP Group.
The students participated with the “Autonomous Irrigation Project”, which proposes a solution to optimize the irrigation needs according to the humidity of the soil, the history and meteorological forecast, the type of terrain and the requirements of the cultivated plants. The prototype also allows access to all the information of the irrigation system from a mobile phone application, as well as direct control of the various functions remotely.
“With this solution, it is possible to optimize agricultural production in a sustainable and autonomous way, promoting energy and water savings, allowing control of the process by mobile phone”, says Professor Luís Manuel Ramos de Oliveira, supervisor of the UAlg team.
The project was initially chosen among the 50 best ideas in the competition, was successively selected in the various qualifiers, having reached the final, together with the teams of the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade do Minho .
