Between April and July, Algarve waters receive laser, 470 and raceboard tests, as decided by the International Olympic Committee and World Sailing
The good health security conditions offered by Vilamoura led the International Olympic Committee and World Sailing to transfer four more important international events to Portugal, with the organization of Vilamoura Sailing.
“The eyes of the sailing world are concentrated in Vilamoura, the only place on the planet where competitions in the sport are taking place”, points out the Algarve training center.
After the World Championships of class 470 – in which the brothers Pedro and Diogo Costa managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo – and in Europe of RS: X, which ended at the weekend off Vilamoura, and after the Finn's European, already announced and scheduled for April, the Olympic laser qualification event (male and female), the European Championship of 470 and the European Championship of raceboard, discipline of windsurfing, are now confirmed.
“The fact that the International Olympic Committee and World Sailing hand over, for the first time, the responsibility for organizing all these Olympic qualifications to a single entity is the recognition of the professionalism and organizational excellence of the Vilamoura Sailing team”, stresses Nuno Reis, director of Vilamoura Sailing.
Sailors from seven of the ten Olympic classes intern in the region
In addition, for several months now, sailors from all over the world, from seven of the ten Olympic classes, have been in the Algarve, at the Vilamoura marina, in preparation for Tokyo2020.
Currently, Vilamoura has become the most important place in the world for training Olympic-class teams throughout the winter.
“This is unique, I don't know of any other place that has hosted so many Olympic classes in such a short time. The anti-Covid measures adopted by the Vilamoura marina, the infrastructure and services offered to sailors and the good wind conditions that make it possible to sail every day, make this place truly unique in the world ”, explains World Sailing's Nino Shmueli.
Until July, this is the intense calendar of major international competitions planned for the waters of Vilamoura.
