The municipality of São Brás de Alportel and the University of Algarve formalized yesterday, Monday, the 11th, a partnership that aims to “value and reissue”, until the end of 2024, the work of José Dias Sancho, illustrious poet and fiction writer from São Paulo. died on this day 92 years ago.
The partnership was formalized at the Municipal Library Dr. Estanco Louro, which marked with this special moment the beginning of the year in which it celebrates 20 years of “continuous activity at the service of the community, in defense of the culture and the authors of São Paulo”, stresses the autarchy, in a statement.
The agreement was signed by the rector of the University of the Algarve, Paulo Águas and by the mayor of São Brás de Alportel, Vitor Guerreiro, in a brief moment witnessed by José Uva, José Dias Sancho's great nephew, representing the family of this “illustrious and talented São Brasense who died very early, leaving his brief most intense passage through life, a valuable work that is still to be discovered and valued ”.
The partnership has in its genesis the research work that Sílvia Quinteiro, a professor at the University of Algarve, has been developing at the level of the multiple possibilities of intersection between the scientific areas of literature and tourism.
Sílvia Quinteiro considers the study and dissemination of the work of José Dias Sancho to be of “high interest”, through an updated edition of the work of this São Paulo-based author, so that it is accessible to the general public, as well as to teachers, students and researchers.
An idea shared by the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, which in 2004 had already marked the 75th anniversary of his death with a program of initiatives aimed at "stimulating interest in his work".
With this partnership agreement, the municipality commits to publishing the updated edition by the University of Algarve, composed of a set of six books, of different shades, from short stories to conferences, from satirical criticism to poetry and from sparse romances.
The agreement provides for the six books to be published by the end of 2024, with the first volume coming soon.
Lawyer, poet and fiction writer, José Dias Sancho was born in São Brás de Alportel on April 22, 1898. He died in Faro, on January 11, 1929.
Very precocious, since he was a teenager, José Dias Sancho produced poetry of great quality and revealed his sense of critical humor, which he also expressed through caricature.
At the age of 16, he wrote for a Liceu party «A Ceia dos Cábulas», a parody of «Ceia dos Cardeais», by Júlio Dantas.
Years later, he returned to criticizing the work of Júlio Dantas in the book «Ídolos de Barros» (2nd volume).
He was one of the founders of Correio do Sul and collaborated with many newspapers in the region, including Folha de Alte, Vida Algarvia and Costa de Oiro magazine, in Lagos, where, among other works, he published the children's story «No Reino dos Bonecos ».
In Lisbon, he wrote for Diário de Notícias, for Diário de Lisboa, for the Century and for A Situation, of which he was director. As a university student at the Faculty of Law in Lisbon, he collaborated with Académico, a fortnightly newspaper defending academic interests.
He graduated in 1926 but did not get to practice law. He was an officer appointed in the Civil Registries of Ourique and São Brás de Alportel.
He married Maria Helena Pousão Pereira Dias Sancho, daughter of the poet João Lúcio, with whom he had a daughter, Maria Luzia, to whom the short story «El-Rei-bébé» is dedicated.
At the time of his death, on January 11, 1929, he was a member of the Civil Registry of Faro.
The Municipality of São Brás de Alportel gave its name to one of the main arteries of the village and immortalized its poetry in one of the beautiful fountains in the municipality, Fonte da Silva.
“Of the typical and genuinely Algarve prose, romantic poet, his literary work marks one of the most notable values of the modern generation, deserving from Portuguese critics, the most flattering references, considered among the great ones of literature: Cândido Guerreiro, Ferreira de Castro, Sousa Costa and Norberto Araújo ”, stresses the autarchy.
The following works were published: «Canções de Amor», a collection of poetry; «Mephistopheles Serenade», a work of satirical poetry, in blocks; «Deus Pan», rustic tales; «El-Rei-Bébé», dedicated to his daughter, who inherited her gift of poetry and a taste for drawing; and «Bezerros de Ouro», a novel that can still be seen today as a social critic.
