Rocco Wright, 13, the best sailor of his category in Ireland and one of the best in the world, chose Portimão as the training site for the European optimist, scheduled for October.
“Being unable to train in Ireland because of Covid-19, it was necessary to find a safe place for Rocco to prepare to win the European Optimist. And they did not find it better than the Clube Naval de Portimão (CNP), in the Algarve, where they discovered all the safety conditions in operation ”, says the Portimonense club, in a statement.
Young Rocco Wright already trained in Portimão yesterday, Wednesday, and will stay in the Algarve with his family – his father, Darren Wright, makes regattas on the big sailboats, in the Rolex trophy -, until the end of July.
The sailor won the British Optimist Championship, in the children's class, in 2018, among 120 competitors from 13 countries, and in 2019, his first year as a juvenile, he was in 10th place in the World Championship.
“At the moment when the coronavirus stopped sports, the experts gave it as guaranteed on the podium, with wide possibilities of being a world champion”, points out the CNP about the Irishman, who is preparing to participate in the European Championship scheduled for Slovenia, between 18 and October 25th.
